![]() Many years ago, I was contacted by a local building inspector who asked me to help recommend some minimum insulation values he could then carry forward to the International Code Council for inclusion in the new energy conservation code that was under development. It is our job to counter Mother Nature’s efforts in order to deliver good, efficient comfort. Before the basement would heat up, you have to charge the area below the floor so energy starts flowing upward. Mother Nature despises any differences in temperature, pressure, humidity, etc., and will do whatever she can to make them equal. Another disadvantage in this situation is if a control zone valve should fail, it may be weeks before the owner realizes he has no heat and once repaired, it may once again take weeks of run time to get the zone back to a stable condition. It is impossible to insulate a slab after the fact. He was shocked when he got his utility bill, and we reminded him that he didn’t think the conservation efforts we had proposed were necessary. It took about 30 days of nearly continuous run time to get the basement to a stable temperature condition. If you or your company would like to find out more about radiant heating and how it can benefit your future projects then why not get in touch with us to arrange a seminar on an introduction to radiant heating. We cautioned him that the system may have to run for weeks in order to charge the connected mountaintop with enough energy to stabilize the basement temperatures, and he scoffed at this suggestion. ![]() This is particularly advantageous for hospitals and schools. With little or no air movement, dust particles don’t get shifted around the room which makes them a very hygienic method of heating any space. Radiant heating panels are passive so the only noise comes from the boiler which is usually tucked away Most radiant heating panels are hidden away into the ceiling so if you didn’t know what they looked like, you wouldn’t notice they were there. For example if a room temperature was 18☌, with radiant heating panels you typically feel as if it was 21☌. In simple terms, you feel warm at a lower air temperature. Like the sun needs to see you so that you feel its direct warmth, radiant panels also need to see the objects in a room for it to be fully effective.Ĭomfort levels – Radiant heating panels allow levels of comfort to be achieved at a lower air temperature than with mainstream convectors. The air temperature may be cold but when the sun shines on you, you feel warmth even though the air temperature hasn’t changed. Try to think of it like the sun on a clear day in winter. This means that comfort levels are achieved more efficiently with radiant panels than with convectors. The difference between the two is that radiant heat works on the principles of heating objects in the space like desks, walls and people directly instead of heating the air which in turn heats the objects. Radiant Heating Panels work in a similar way to radiators – They heat your room. We describe how it works below but if you would like to discuss it, please get in touch New to Radiant? New to Radiant Heating and want to know how it works?
